Gaj and square feet, defined
What is a gaj
A gaj is a unit of land area used across Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana and Punjab, and in the states around them. In plot listings and sale deeds it is treated as 9 square feet, which makes one gaj the same area as one square yard. You will also see it spelled gaz, or written as varg gaj or square gaj, which all mean the same area unit.
What is a square foot
A square foot is the area of a square with one-foot sides. Builders quote carpet area and built-up area in square feet, and most property portals list plots in it, which is why a gaj figure from a deed so often needs converting.

Multiply the gaj figure by 9. One gaj to square feet is 9; the same gaj to square feet conversion scales to any size. To go the other way, divide square feet by 9. If a document or tool uses the square guz, replace 9 with 8.91359 in both directions and say so when you quote the number. What about Google's guz at 8.91?
Google Units treats a square guz as roughly 8.91359 square feet. That is a different definition from the 9 square feet gaj used in listings. Neither is wrong; they are two conventions. This converter defaults to 9 and lets you switch to 8.914 with the change clearly labelled.
