There are two figures for a gaj in square feet.
- 9, the North-India plot convention, on deeds and listings. Use this unless you have a reason not to.
- 8.91359, the Google Units square guz. Use this only to reproduce a number that was made with it.

The steps
- Write down the gaj figure. From the listing, the deed or the broker. Say 150.
- Multiply by 9. 150 × 9 = 1,350. A quick way: multiply by 10 and subtract the original. 1,500 − 150 = 1,350.
- Label the result in square feet. 1,350 sq ft. Write the factor next to it if anyone else will read it: “1,350 sq ft at 9”.
- Optional: check the guz figure. 150 × 8.91359 = 1,337.04. If a brochure says 1,337 for the same plot, that is why.
The formula
Square feet = gaj × 9
Gaj = square feet ÷ 9 (the reverse)
Because 9 is a whole number, gaj to square feet never produces a messy decimal if the gaj figure is whole. The reverse does: 1,000 square feet is 111.11 gaj. The square feet to gaj converter shows that as 111 whole gaj and one square foot over.

Converting the other way
Divide square feet by 9. 1,800 ÷ 9 = 200 gaj. If the division does not come out whole, the remainder is square feet left over after the last whole gaj: 1,500 ÷ 9 = 166 remainder 6, so 166 gaj and 6 square feet, or 166.67 gaj as a decimal.

In construction and registration
Builders quote built-up and carpet area in square feet; the plot on the deed is in gaj. Convert the plot, not the built-up figure, when comparing against the deed. At registration the figure on the approved site plan is the one that counts, and it will already be in the unit the authority uses.
