Acre and gaj: two ends of the scale
A gaj is a house-plot unit: 9 square feet, small enough that a 100-gaj plot is a normal city house. An acre is a field unit: 43,560 square feet, or 4,840 gaj. They meet when a plotted colony is carved out of farmland, when a township parcel is quoted in acres and its plots in gaj, or when a family compares an inherited field with a plot they want to buy.
Local agricultural units such as bigha, kanal and guntha vary by district and state, sometimes by village. This site does not convert them. For the residential end use the Gaj to square feet. Marla and cent are separate units and are not converted here either.
