Architects' drawings, RERA project documents, municipal approvals and most engineering work in India are in metres. A plot bought in gaj lands on a drawing in square metres within a week of the deal. The conversion is exact once you settle the gaj figure, because the square foot has been defined as exactly 0.09290304 m² since 1959.

Multiply by 0.09290304, the exact definition of a square foot in square metres. 900 sq ft × 0.09290304 = 83.61 m².
